Diagnosing Performance Problem?

I have a database server that has is acting very sluggish. Using the performance monitor, I can see that disk use is steadily at 100% usage.

The system is so overburdened that attempting to do even basic tasks (open folders, look in Enterprise Manager, get screen repaints) has become impractical.

Even if I could get to the Enterprise Manager "Process Info" display, what would I look for to tell me what is wrong? From a remote PC, use Profiler to monitor all queries with over say 1000 reads. Copy those queries out to Query Analyzer, and see if you can get some indexes on the underlying tables to speed them up.

Another thing to check is how much memory is in the box? SQL Server will default to taking all it wants, but if you have only 64MB in your box, then you are in for a world-o-hurt.|||Originally posted by MCrowley

How do I do this? What is Profiler?

Found it. This is definitely helping.

Thankfully, we just hired a real DBA who starts Thursday.

Thanks again!

devenv.exe hangs up with alomost 100% cpu usage

For some reason my visual studio with SSIS project hangs up with almost 100% cpu usage sometimes immediately after opening the studio.

Any resolution?

Thanks

I'm having the same problem and it is driving me nuts! I do a lot of BI work and this has disrupted my project timelines significantly.

As best as I can tell. it seems to have start after applying a patch to the .NET framework 2.0. The patch is defined in the KB922770. I'm not sure if this is the culprit by itself or if there are others factors re-enforcing the problem.

Let me know if you come up with a resolution.

Thanks, Darryl

We were able to reduce the occurrence of hangup by 90% with two settings... particulary with the first one.

1. Project property -> Configuration Manger - > Build = UNCHECK (This gets checked mysteriously even though we Uncheck and save in TFS - so we verify for this setting frequently when we open the project). If it is checked - all packages in the project are built/compiled irrespective of package you are working on and if there are 100's of packages - compiling all of them takes hell of time.

2. Tools->Options->Environment->AutoRecovery - Save autorecovery information... = UNCHECK. (I did this bz I saw in the status bar of VS the message: Saving autorecovery details.. when it gets stuck)

Hope it helps you as well (if above setting are not important to you ).

But the problem has not gone altogether.... it still hangs up once in a while.

Thanks

Developer Edition

Hi All,
I have a question regarding the usage of SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition.
Can I use it in a client - server architecture say I install Developer
edition on a server and install client tools(Management studio / profiler)
on desktops and acess as we use Enterprise Edition? The purpose is only
Development (no production work). I am asking this because ours is a small
Organization with major work is done on SQL Server 2000. Only 1 team is
gonna use 2005.
Thanks,
PradThe license for Developer Edition allows you to install the client tools on
any development computer you desire, and to have as many SQL Servers
installed as you might need, for example, a dev server, a test server, a QA
server, etc.
However, each person (developer or tester -or whoever) accessing the servers
covered with the Developer Edition license MUST have a proper license. (I
think that is currently about $50 (US) each.)

Thanks for replying soon.
I know that we can install Dev Edn on Desktops as you said.
My doubt is whether I can install it on only one server and the
clients(desktop mc/) access it. So that I need to update (run build) only on
the Server rather than updating every m/c.
If not possible, I will have to go for Standard Edn right? Hope you
understud my requirement.
Thanks,
Prad
