Diagrams Problem

HI
i have installed VisualStudio Sp6 after this installation when open my Sql
2000 server Sp3 i can't visualize Diagrams. Any operation on this windows
don't work.
I reinstalled Sql Sp3 but don't work.
Can help me?
Tia Pupo
I think I got the same problem!
I even reinstalled and reattached the full developer edition of SQL 2K.
Some diagrams show up as blank white page, often results in a crash when
trying to close diagram. Some shows boxes with table names in a very large
font and without field details or relation lines and symbols.
I did install VS SP6 a few weeks back but didn't make a connection between
the two until now.

DIAGRAMS

Has Microsoft gone totally mad? I can't even start to think about reasons
for totally removing Database Diagrams and Query diagrams from the Data
tools.
How are we supposed to design a database with 70 tables and 100
relationships now? Are we supposed to just type the relationships in one by
one or using the UI they call 'Table Designer'?
2000 to 2005... in 5 years, instead of optimizing one of the best features
in the client tools you just came up with the idea of totally removing it. I
hope this isnt contagious and doesn't spread inside Microsoft or we may well
find ourselves with no drag&drop in Longhorn...
Hi
As a diagramming tool, the one provided with SQL Server is pretty poor. I
would not be sad at such a decission as third party tools and even Visio
have always done the job alot better. After recent judgements against MS,
bundling even a cut down Visio with SQL Server would probably be deemed
anti-competitive, so it seems they are damned whatever they do!

|||Obviously you've never tried to design a large database using Visio and
maintain the diagrams in synch with the actual database. Visio is not a DDL
management tool, it's a drawing application with a buggy synchronization
plugin for databases. When using it against large databases you are
constantly at risk of corrupting the whole database since it frequently
messes up with relationships / indexes / etc.
On the other hand, the Database Diagram is a tool to directly manage these
elements against the database. There is no intermediate store for scheme,
there is no synchronization needed, and the diagrams always show exactly
what is on the database and allows you to modify the elements inmediately.
Creating a relationship is a simple drag&drop operation and checking one or
two options if you want it to cascade. Having to create these relationships
manually is *torture*, unless your database has 10 tables and 5
relationships, or you don't even know what a relationship is for.
No serious database management toolset should be without a tool to allow
quick review and maintenance of relationships, as they consitute the basis
for referential integrity on the database.

So your rant has change from diagrams to code maintainance. Try
something like Erwin if you want to do that, but for Diagrams and
visualisation VISIO is fine (IMO).

You are probably not using source code control then? Use of templates
if you don't want to type things in would reduce the amount of work.
The only time I may even think of using a tool to do this would be
when the naming conventions are poorly concieved.

Your answer is too simple minded for me to bother. "If you want diagrams use
erwin". Why would I need to use erwin if the feature has been in the product
in previous versions?

I can't see how suddenly every developer is using the diagramming
tool, but I guess it suits your rant to use such a hypothesis.

Diagram Editor doesn't work in SQLServer 2000

Hi,
All of a sudden the other day my diagram editor stopped working. I really rely on and can't figure out what happened. Everything else works fine. Since the problem started, I installed SP3 and it didn't help. I'm using a 60 day eval version of SQLS
erver which may have something to do with it (I have one licensed copy that I will install on another machine and am ordering another copy at the moment). Anyways, any ideas?
tdk
tdk,
Did you install VB6 SP6? If so you overwrote the working version of
mdt2df.dll. You will need to restore this dll and register it from before
the update. If you didn't you can try installing an older version of
mdt2df.dll.

All I know is that when I installed VB6 Service Pack 6 it overrode the .dll

I don't think there is any way to view Access diagrams in Enterprise

|||Thanks Samuel, I definitely do have VB SP6 on my machine. I am fairly certain it was installed later than SQLServer. The version of MDT2DF.DLL that I have is 2.0.0.9586, which from what I can gather about version updates on the msdn site is a fairly ne
w version. The question is, how do I get an old version of just that dll? Once I have it, I know how to register it (asusming it's a COM dll, regsvr32).

DHCP vs. Static

My SQL*Server 7 server was working fine this morning... All of a sudden
anyone that is set up using DHCP to get IP Settings can't connect to any
databases... If I change them to a static IP Address it works fine...
Can't remember the exact message but it was something along the lines of
"SQL Server not found or access denied".....
I can get the full message if required...
Sounds like the DHCP server is dispensing the wrong information, possibly
about the DNS server. The error is usually a name resoultion problem, i.e.
the client cannot resolve the server name to its network address.
After a client acquires it ip address via DHCP, run ipconfig /all form a
command prompt and compare the values with a client that has a static ip
address.

It is dispensing the right information. I am thinking that the corporate
weenies changed
something somewhere and it is causing us problems...
Funny thing is, machines that have a static ip address and the same DNS
Servers entered manually
work just fine.
What I did for now was remove the DNS Servers from the DHCP settings and am
doing a
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
after this is done and the DNS servers aren't set on the DHCP enabled
machines, everything works fine...
Of course any internet stuff is broken....
What could change to cause a situation like that?

Developer Edition Installation - Named Instance can't be opened

The installation appears to work OK but I can't register the NAMED instance

I am installing this in Windows XP
Any help is appreciated.
jimThis may be basic but are you trying to register it using the following
name:

If you are and it is still failing. Look at the SQL Server errorlog form

named pipes. If you are trying to register it on the server itself shared
memory is used by default. Trying regiistering it uisng the IP address and

Developer cant handle dates

Do I have to convert dates for a .NET developer so they can capture ms?
Or is there a method they are suppose to be using
I had to remove my modified date check to check for data collisions because they can't pass back microseconds.
What's the dealDepending on which of the .NET languages is being used, and in most of them which data type is being used, temporal data can be stored to the day, second, or true millisecond (which is actually more precise than SQL Server can store).

The short answer becomes something like: If you want absolute portability, convert and send them text (character) data. If they are using C#, C++, or VB then they just have to choose the correct data type. Most of the other .NET languages can store times to millieconds, but depending on the language that can be a pain in the patoot.

-PatP|||This dodges the obvious bullet about most developers not being able to even get a date, much less handle one! ;)

-PatP|||i thought this was a craigslist post.|||OK, CONVERT it is

And why is sql server limited in th MS category?

Something about clock speed?

i have two servers, both running SSAS, my production server recently became really slow performing lookups, just in one cube. I cant seem to find the root cause. I took a backup of the production and loaded it exactly as production but on a different server. I can query the cube in development fast. Looking at profiler, it seems the one cube with performance issues isnt looking up things in cache at first, it takes one try, then queries are fast. I have read some places online about cache warming, which is a great idea, but it doesnt make sense that the same cube in my dev environment is working just fine without cache warming. Anyone have any insights?

Are there any security roles applied in production that may not be applied in dev?

There are a couple of things around security roles that could result is slightly slower performance. If you are running as a server admin you sometimes get better performance as security roles are not applied at all. And the formula engine caches cannot be shared over security roles. So if you had mulitple different secuirty roles being used in production the amount of cache re-use would be reduced.

|||no, the security roles are the same. After investigating more, I found the Aggregation Manager util that comes with the samples and ran that against dev and prod, it looks like prod has 0 for aggregation counts where dev has counts..I wonder how that can be though, why one wouldn't be working and the other would when dev was just restored from prod's backup.

Is there anything in some settings or something where the aggregations are messed up or not working correctly for some reason? Maybe memory limits or disk, or something? I'm not having much luck finding out how they could be different. Even rebuilding the aggreations on prod through BIDS didnt change the count (i tested on a few partitions). Its like the prod server doesnt recognize the aggregations for some reason
|||let me rephrase that

the aggregation counts are there, like there are 25-30 per partition, but when i view the record count distirbution per aggreagation, all my records are in "No aggregation"
|||

Just to double check, are you using MOLAP storage?

How did you do your backup and restore? Did you do a full archive and restore or did you script the structures and re-process on dev?

Are you by any chance doing just a processData on your partitions? (this will not process aggregations)

Do you have any proactive caching on prod which might cause the cache to be flushed?

|||
yes using MOLAP

After more investigating, there was no full backup. We did try doing a full deployment from dev to production last night and it didnt change anything even after a full reprocess..

we dont have proactive caching set up

still stumped on this one..
|||we did another deploy and it seems to fix the issue, just a weird anamoly
|||Strange. All I can think if is that someone might have designed additional aggregations after the solution was deployed to production.
