Development server vs Live server deployment

How do you guys handle this? I want to create and develop our reports on our
development report services server with its own SQL server 2005 server...
then later when they are tested and working deploy them to our live server
with a completly different instance of SQL Server 2005 (enterprise edition)
and have them run there on its report services server with its data source
as itself... how would you go about doing this? thanks! Also is there a way
to change the database and database server at runtime (say in a VB.NET
application?) thanks!Smokey,
Check this page :

for "PublishSampleReports.rss"
This should answer your "how would you go about doing this" part of the
question...

just going from development to production? If you use shared datasources
then you configure it once on each server and after that you are good to go.
The reports go against the shared datasource which defaults to not being
overwritten so when you deploy it is left alone.

Our Live server can have multiple databases with the same exact schema (we
have a Live system with real time data, and a testing system with weekly
data from the live system for testing out stuff) when we log into our
application you select the server and which database you are going to work
with... in crystal reports we manually changed the mappings in the report to
get it to work with the different databases on the server then ran the
report, just wondering how you can do something similar in reporting server.
90% of the time the reports are ran in the live system, but we still have to
support the other 10% and dont want to make copies of reports for each
database, because techincally, someone could make another database at any
point in time with the same schema

Development Procedures

Hello,

Recently my partner in crime (so to speak) and I have been asked to develop procedures and/or methods for our software development group. Currently we're running SQL Server 8 with several Access apps and Crystal Reports. In a nutshell, I'm looking for resources.

We're supposed to develop a process (we're both DBA's) where our development team can formally submit new stored procedures, views, or whatever they've come up with to solve for buisiness requirements. It'll be our job to take thier scripts and execute them on the production database after ensuring someone has tested the logic and signed-off on it.

Unfortunately, I have been charged with developing this process (ie: development, sign-off, testing, etc..). Currently we have no procedures in place; until now my partner and I have been the primary deveopers (this is about to change). Are there any resources out there that could help me develop a formal process for our soon-comming developers?

Thanks,

Jason

Jason -

You can check out InformIT.com - they have lots of information there on a "professional" nature, not just technical info. I do the SQL Server "Guide", and I've got an article or two that might be useful.

Most of the Software Development articles will point towards a particular methodology or tool. I've found that most shops develop their own methods and call it an "SDLC" or Software Development Life Cycle. Also check out a book called "Code Complete".

Development Environment Needs?

Trying to figure out what development enviroment we need in order to
do the following:

- develop a non-native SQL server stored procedure;
- call a web service or java program from the stored procedure;
- return static values;
- call the stored procedure from a view.

How do I get a hold of the right tools and what do I need to put the
pieces together?

Obviously, I've not used SQL server and I'm looking for the basic
starting point.

Thanks!CG (chelseagraylin@.hotmail.com) writes:

You cannot call stored procedures from views. You can call extended
stored procedures from used-defined functions though, and these you
call from views. (Or use table-valued functions which are basically
parameterized views, and which can be multi-statement.)

Typically you develop extended stored procedures in C++. If you want to
talk .Net you would need a COM interop.

Since you appear to be forward-looking, you might find interest in
the upcoming version of SQL Server, where you can program CLR directly
in SQL Server. In SQL 2005 you can develop the function directly in
CLR. To call a web service there would still be a few things to go
through, but it would certainly be easier.

Beta 2 of SQL Server is expected soon, and this will be a public beta.

For SQL Server I would recommend using Developer Edition, which is at
49 USD only. Developer Edition comes with graphic tools, and having
Query Analyzer to submit queries is invaluable.

However, once you go in production, you are better of with MSDE, since
Developer Edition is not licensed for production. (And for some strange
reason, the graphic tools can be used against MSDE according to the
license.)

You will also need a couple of include files and link libraries. They
come with Devloper Edition.

For the C++ environment I am not really the guy to ask, but Visual
Studio is of course a safe bet. If you go for GNU C++ to use freeware,
you will probably need the Platform SDK, which I have no idea how it
is available outside VS.

> Sounds so easy...

Getting the environment is indeed the easy part. The actual development
is likely to be tougher. Writing extended stored procedures is not for
the faint of heart. Keep in mind that they execute in-process, so an
access violation in your XP can crash the entire SQL Server.

Don't forget source code control, such as Visual Source Safe or PVCS... If
you go the whole Microsoft suite then a MSDN subscription would be an
excellent investment.

Development database, what to use?

The web hotel I am using have MS SQL server installed. I do not have it on my local development PC.

How do I develop and test a website, locally, using MS SQL DB, without having MS SQL sever. Is there any light MS SQL sever I can use with a good user interface, and then just upload the DB to MS SQL server?

Please advise, NewBe2Get SQL Server developer edition. And you are set.

SQL Server IS light, compared to the serious competition.

Developing WAP using ASP.NET and Web Services

Hi all,

I would like to develop WAP using ASP.NET which can connect to the Database( MS SQL Server ). Is it possible to do it? I try to find the tutorial but I cannot find it.

Another thing I want to ask is can I connect the WAP to the web services that I create using ASP.NET, anyone can tell me how to do it.

Thanks, Regards.

REDWAP is something that is sent to and displayed on the client. ASP.NET and Web Services are server side technologies. You can certainly have your ASP.NET application call out to a Web service, and then send the results to your WAP device.

Developer Edition

We are looking at putting Developer Edition on a server to allow us to test and develop databases/applications which will then be moved to one of our live standard licensed servers. I have a couple of questions as the licencing is confusing
1. Is the licence per developer? Our developers often work together, so can we licence each developer so they can all access one test server
2. Some documentation refers to a maximum of 5 connections. Is this in total or concurrently
2. Can users with existing CAL's access the server for the purpose of testing and evaluation
ThnakLicencing is per developer if bought standalone. If you are getting
Developer edition via MSDN subscription or similar, it is governed by the
EULA for MSDN.
Lots of info here;

develop RS2000 report through V Studio.NET 2005

Hi all, is it possible to create RS2000 format reports through Visual Studio
.NET 2005? I am going to purchase Visual Studio .NET for developing RS2000
reports as my ERP system only supports SQL server 2000.No. If you need to develop RS 2000 reports then you need some version of VS
2003 (VB.Net 2003 is the cheapest option). DO NOT buy VS 2005. That will not
work with rhe RS 2000 report designer. RS 2005 comes with its own version of
VS and not purchase of VS is needed.
Also, note that RS 2005 can be installed using SQL Server 2000. However, as
I mentioned, RS 2005 only creates 2005 reports, not 2000 reports.

My problem is, I will not purchase SQL 2005 until my ERP system is going to

develop reports(public on report server 1.0) in vs2005 ?

as title,is anyway to translate two different format rdl files?
thx !

I'm not 100% sure I understand your question, but I think you are asking if you can create reports using Visual Studio 2005 that will run under SSRS 2000: Please correct me if I've misunderstood.

The answer to your question is "no". SSRS 2005 uses an updated RDL schema that 2000 doesn't understand. If you use VS 2005 to create a report, you use the updated schema, therefore 2000 won't work.

I've started a list of these questions / answers at the following location if you want to contribute and/or read:

A translation between the 2003/10 RDL namespace and the 2005/01 RDL namespace is done for instance automatically by loading a report in report designer and saving it. It is performed implicitly when uploading a report on a RS 2005 report server.

A translation from 2005/01 back to 2003/10 is doable (e.g. with a XSLT), but I'm not aware of any publicly available tool at this point. There are not many differences between the 2003/10 and the 2005/01 RDL schemas - you can look at the specs at: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/technologies/reporting/rdlspec.mspx

You can also download the XSDs at:
http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/reporting/2003/10/reportdefinition/reportdefinition.xsd

http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/reporting/2005/01/reportdefinition/ReportDefinition.xsd

Develop multiusers applications with SQL Server Express

Can I develop applications with SQL Server Express that I have more than one user in several computers working with the same database on a server, or I can only develop applications with only one user with a local database with SQL Server Express?

SQL Server Express will support multiple users. To connect from other computers you must first enable "Local and remote connections" in the Surface Area configuration tool .

You should also read the Blog entry at http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/archive/2005/05/05/415084.aspx. You may need to enable SQL Browser and create Excpetions in your Firewall to allow people to connect to your SQL Express server. It all depends on the configuration of your computer and how you want to connect.

Develop in VS2005 and deployment to SQL 2000

Develop Database on Local machine? MSDE

Hi all
I am experiencing a problem comming to grip[s with MSDE and what it does.
I need to develop an SQL Server Database but i only have a Windos XP OS
and not a server type system.
From what i understand i should be able to use msde as the engine and
utilsie the tools that i can install with SQL SERVER eg enterprise manager.
To my way odf thinking that would enable me to develop a database with
out the need for a server OS.
If this is correct i am having trouble installing MSDE 2000 and using it
with enterprise manager. can some please put me on the right path.
I have used the MSDE with SQL Server but the service seems to stop and i
cant get it restarted, so i am beliveing i just dont have it setup
properly.
Please any docs or sites and advice sent my way will be greatly appreciated.
What is the best environment to develop with one PC?
Thanks in advance

WinXP is fine, and you cna install on it bot MSDE and/or SQL Server Desktop
Edition or SQL Server Developer edition, now priced at $49.00 =;-D.
the latest solution, the Dev edition, shoul'd be the best one to go, both
for pricing and for tools... you have all the tools you (usually) need to
develop, test and tune your application(s), and then you cna bundle MSDE
with tem, as MSDE was really not intended for develping phase, even if it
can...
as regard your MSDE instance, it's not clear to me your inconvenient... does
it starts and then stops? or does it not start at all?
please check, in the services control panel applet, the account running SQL
Server and SQL Server Agent services...

|||Hi andrea
Thanks for your advice, the MSDE instance does start, but for a reason i
cannot find it stops and i cant seem to get it to restart, My only way
to get going again was to uninstall msde and reinstall. I have my
database saved
I have tried the 2000a version of MSDE but get very confused as a
service manager does not appear. so i have no idea on how to get things
going. The doco is more towards deploying than stting up on a local machine.
Can i ask if the developer version is in the Visual studio .net package?
as i might get this (still a student).
Or maybe your view on an ideal developer environment for SQL Server
(Oracle is so much easier) i intend doing the front end with VB
your help is greatly appreciated

if you set up MSDE without enabling network protocols, the installed
instance can not be shown in service manager combobox as reported in

the Dev edition of SQL Server comes only in VS.Net enterprise package... the

Hi andrea
Thanks for your reply, after a long night last night i worked it all
out, i had to actually go to the services window and physically start
service manager, somehow it was set to manual.
Now i have another issue, when i create a database i get a suspect next
to the DB and and an error 5105 "database already exists".
i have searched long and hard on this issue and it seems to be one of
those things that a number of problems could be causing it. do you have
any sugestions.

Dev cube on 32-bit, production on 64?

Please help me confirm that the following scenario is reasonable.

I believe that I can develop an SSAS DB and cube on SQL 2005 "Dev/32 bit" and deploy dev builds locally using BIDS, and then deploy a production version, still using my local BIDS, straight to the "Production/64 bit" server (with same SP).

Am I correct that this will work and is a standard approach? Are there any obvious gotchas I should know about?

Thanks very much.

Daniel Upton

Yes this will work, and this approach is used by many users.
